I was searching the web for a way that i could change the default boot-up screen of Ubuntu, because lets face it Ubuntu’s boot up screen isn’t the most pretty thing. I came across an application called Start-up manager, which not only allows me to change my boot-up screen but allows me to do a ton of other things.

Some of the features of Start-up manager include:

  1. The ability to change:
  • Grub timeout
  • Default boot title
  • Number of kernels in bootloader menu
  • Enable/disable boot option for memtest86
  • Enable/disable boot option for “rescue mode”
  • If the default boot option should be automatically updated
  • Bootup resolution and color depth
  • Grub menu colors
  • Grub menu resolution(Grub2 only)
  • If Splashy should be loaded from initramfs

2. The ability to Create:

  • A Rescue floppy disk

3. Change the visibility of:

  • Grub menu
  • Grub menu colors
  • Grub menu background image
  • Splash screen and boot text\

4. Password protect the following:

  • Grub menu from editing
  • “Alternate” boot options
  • Old boot options

Now enough of this, lets get onto the installtion since start-up manager is present in the repositories of Ubuntu installing it is very easy simply enter this command:

sudo apt-get install startupmanager

Once start start-up manager is installed you can open its GUI by going to  System—>Administration—>Startup-Manager. You will be prompted for the system’s root password enter the password and then you should see that start-up starts loading

Once start-up manager loads you should see a window similar to this:

To change the boot-up screen click on the Appearance tab. then click on the “manage usplash themes” button at the bottom

Click on the Add button and point start-up manager to where your theme is located. To get loads of cool boot-up themes head here.
